Finding the Right College Team and Opportunity

Along with your great skills, sending a personalized email to a coach you'd like to play for is possibly the best step you can take toward playing sports in college.

Introduce yourself in a way that shows you know about their program, and how your skills and work ethic will add something to that program. Following up with a phone call is a good idea too. There are rules that strictly regulate when coaches can call athletes, but you can initiate contact and call a coach at any time. Also, having an online athletic resumé is an important tool to highlight your athletic accomplishments and academic strengths.

Colleges and universities that offer sports are in one of several different athletic organizations. Each organization has different eligibility requirements, and those requirements are separate and in addition to those for basic admission to the school.
